We recently completed our HUGE economics unit in class. We spent the first couple of weeks discussing producers, consumers, goods, services, income, etc. Then I told them that our class would become a factory and that we would be producing flower pens to sell. I told them all of the jobs needed in our factory and they even had to fill out an application to apply for the job they wanted. I bought the supplies, they took orders, then we made flower pens like crazy! The first Factory Friday we made 235 flower oens. The second and last Factory Friday we make 237 flower pens for a grand total of 472 flower pens! Each pen cost $1 and our goal was to make enough money to adopt an animal at the Houston Zoo. We voted and the organgutan won. After counting up our last orders I found out that we made enough money to adopt TWO animals!! So when we return from Spring Break we'll vote on our second animal. Here are a few pictures from our second Factory Friday. I have some pictures from the first day but I'll have to post them later. Thanks to all moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends who purchased flower pens! You made our factory a huge success!
First we had to pop the caps off of the pens.
Then put a glue dot on the pen and attach the flower.
Our next table would measure and cut the green tape.
Then we had a table of wrappers.
They would wrap the green floral tape around the pen!
They had to make sure the tape was nice and tight.
One other job was called a runner. They would take supplies to the tables and "run" the flowers and pens from table to table.
Last but certainly not least, was our quality control. This group would check each and every pen to make sure it was the best quality possible and if not they would return it to the appropriate factory workers. :)
We had a lot of fun, and learned a lot too!!!
